Freedom is something most of us take for granted. I know that I have. I was lucky to be born to a middle-class white family on the East Coast of the USA. We may not have had a lot of money, but we never went without. We may not have had the latest stylish stuff or fancy vacations but we had a lot of connection and looking back, this was much more important than the stuff ever was.

I now look back and am filled with gratitude for the efforts my family made and the sacrifices I now understand that they did willingly in order to make sure we always had food on our tables, a roof over our heads, clothes on our backs, and for the connection of family.  I did not question whether I would go to school, have a chance to have higher education, or would be taken care of when I was sick. Though I must admit, that at the time, I just took it all for granted.
As time marches on, I am much more aware of the fact this is a privilege and not all people are as lucky as I am, yet I still catch myself still taking things for granted. I have to remind myself just how lucky I am. Life has shown me some challenges and it may not have always been easy, but I now hear my Mom’s words softly in my ear, “Whoever told you life was meant to be fair or easy?

The quieter you become, the more you can hear.

Today I practice gratitude for all that I have and I practice calling our injustices I see, I strive to practice what I teach and I try to not give unsolicited advice. Yet, sometimes there is a moment when it is important to highlight an opportunity and today is that day.
Today is the Birthday of a Nation. America. She is 244 years old. She is not aging very well in my humble opinion and I think that she is suffering a little bit. Freedom was not and never will be free or easy.
This year is very different in so many ways because of our global challenges and uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 crisis as well as the heightening awareness and outcry against inequalities. So take this chance to in fact embrace this difference, and use this quiet time to reflect on what this day means and why it matters.  What does freedom mean to you? And what are you willing to do in order to keep your freedom safe?

There is no nightlife in Spain. They stay up late, but they get up late. That is not nightlife. That is delaying the day. ~ Ernest Hemingway

Today, I am honoring the birthday of the USA, Fourth of July, quietly on my own terrace in my Spanish seaside town. For those that don’t know my personal story very well, suffice to say, I have chosen to live my life walking to the beat of my own drummer. I have a nomad spirit and a soulful connection to the world. Living abroad does not make me any less American, and as I often am heard quoting to the locals here in my hometown of San Sebastian, “You can take the chica outta NYC but you can’t take the NYC outta the chica.”

Freedom is not the right to do anything. It is the right to the correct thing.

Believing in the land of plenty, and the power of positivity plus the knowledge that a lifetime Designer has that our spaces make a HUGE difference in the quality of our health, of how we show up for others and the state of universal balance, I have a birthday present for you. If you know your spaces matter, and you want to make yours a healthier, and happier space for you and your family.
