One of my biggest challenges as a designer is to help my clients come to a decision about the STUFF they are going to purchase to go in their new space. The sheer volume of CHOICE is often overwhelming and can literally STOP you in your tracks.
So much choice!

So much choice!

With the invention of the internet, the sheer volume of information available to the average person has increased to such levels that it is said we have the same amount of information DAILY that our grandparents had in their entire LIFE. (*this statistic keeps changing so it is hard to verify it or not though you get the point!)
The interior design, home decorating, architectural and construction arena is just one industry of many that have felt these dramatic changes and has literally morphed into a brand new entity altogether.
People want to be INVOLVED in their own design projects more than ever before. I LOVE this because it is the creative COLLABORATION that is the cornerstone of my holistic design practice. The CHALLENGES are however, in finding ways to help you to navigate the many choices available and how to wade through loads of information without falling into overload.

Below are a few of my DESIGNER TIPS on how to make your best and quickest design decisions…
Take the time in the beginning to get a clear picture of what you want from your remodel, renovation or decoration project. As Alice and the Cat talked about in the famous book, Alice in Wonderland, if you don’t know where you are going, then any road will get you there. Figure it out first, then the rest is a whole bunch easier.

S. Lee Wright

Once you know where you are going, it is much easier to get there.

You have to be willing to ask yourself the questions if you want the answers

You have to be willing to ask yourself the questions if you want the answers

Often in our hectic world, we do not SLOW DOWN enough to know what we truly love, or are attracted to. The process of doing a design renovation offers you this RARE opportunity to consider your inner self and decide what you really find beautiful. I feel this is one of the BEST aspects of doing a home renovation process and one of the LEAST understood. I have created a special process called the Magic Box™ to help my clients have fun on the journey of SELF-DISCOVERY for their inner design muse.
Take your time to discover what MAKES YOUR HEART SING– not what the world is trending now, not what is on sale, not what your mother had, or your best friend – but what speaks to you and only you. Then you have your own definition of beauty.

Nothing is beautiful from every point of view. ~Horace

Slowing down at this stage, instead of jumping into the ‘fun’ part of the project has saved my clients literally thousands and thousands of dollars. They don’t make the same mistakes as many others by jumping into the purchasing of products without a vision first, or worse starting construction without any idea of the final game plan. Be smart, start with a vision.
Now, this seems so easy and straightforward but apparently, it is not. It is one of the areas I help my clients with the most. There is a lot of information available to you and many templates to use in order to define what you want, how much it will cost and balance that against what you can comfortably afford. Write it down, then stick to it!
A faucet can cost anywhere from $60 to $6000...what's your budget?

If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

QUALITY does have value so it is important to be realistic about what something should cost you.  It is a balancing act that needs to be carefully managed between function, value, and budget. From a SUSTAINABLE point of view, I always steer my clients towards VALUE over SCOPE.  In other words, go for LESS and HIGHER quality every time. You can then be proud of what you have purchased and feel good about it with no concerns about things breaking down or wearing out.
Of course, the truth is that there are a lot of CHOICES so you need to decide what is IMPORTANT to you.  Is it the cost, the availability or the style or function?  Only YOU can decide what it is and I recommend you have this understood when determining your overall project VISION.
No matter what your budget there is always a design solution. Ironically it is the smaller budgets which are often the most challenging and this is when having a PROFESSIONAL team can be the most value to you because they can help you to AVOID mistakes and wasting money. This is something for you to consider which may not be so obvious at first glance. The key to SUCCESS is to be REALISTIC with what you can spend and then STICK to it.

I am currently working with a client on the product and finish selection phase of her project.  She shared that my holistic design methodology was helping her to make her decisions FASTER and BETTER in this overwhelming world and that I shared the same principles as GTD (Getting Things Done by David Allen).  What a great insight to see that many of us are aiming to help people move forward faster and easier so you can live more and worry less.

Nothing happens until you decide. Make a decision and watch your life move forward.

~ Oprah

The reason you are doing your design project in the first place is so you can have a happy home to live in.  Stop renovation procrastination, and start focusing on living more.

As we evolve, our homes should too. ~ Suzanne Tucker

There will always be other choices, some better some worse. There will be more options, new inventions, different solutions. Always. This is the wonderful world in which we live in. Every day there are literally millions of new design solutions being born so we cannot possibly know them all and foresee the future. Make your best decision now, trust yourself and your design team and move on.

Everything is interconnected so whether you can see it or not in a design project so if you change one thing it will have a deeper impact on many other things, some more apparent than others. I highly recommend that once you have chosen everything, just stick with it.

If you think it’s expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur. ~ Red Adair

Changing your mind mid-stream is very dangerous and is often due to the change in vibration around you during construction and not even necessarily because of the need to change something.  We do get affected by the chaos of the process – that is part of my holistic approach – to help people recognize and honor this during their home renovations.
